Brutus and Cassius

Today's Goal: A first read of the Act One exchange between Brutus and Cassius in order to identify and interpret rhetorical devices, rhetorical appeals, and the purpose of Cassius' speech.

The Plan:
1. Read!
2. Vocab Test (18 minutes)
3. Read the text together (it's on paper). Annotate SO MUCH.
4. Answer a few questions on this Google Form

The amount of homework you get for this weekend depends entirely on how well you are on-task today. Remember this.

CLICK HERE for a list of tone words!!

A couple notes:
  • Your books should be the first thing on your desk when you sit down. Don't even open your computer until you have a book out.
  • Once you finish a book, start a new one.
  • No, I haven't graded your essays yet. You will get an email when I assess it. You will not get a "score" yet because it's not about the score. First, you must focus on your areas of strength and weakness.

HOMEWORK:
  1. Turn in your Book Review on Turnitin.com before midnight tonight.
  2. Complete this Google Form.

What's going on with Simon? and other inquiries

Our agenda today:
  1. Literacy Letter
  2. A short video about Hurricane Katrina
  3. Continue looking at the Katrina Superdome article (just the last page)
  4. A close look at a passage from Chapter 8 in Lord of the Flies
  5. A little bit of writing in your English Journal

A few things to write in your English Journal in complete sentences. (Make sure to include today's date, and this goes at the top of the document) It is expected that for each of these questions, you write at least 3-4 sentences, and develop your thought fully. If you do not finish in class, it is homework:
  1. In the Superdome article, why did the author choose to end the article by talking about Samuel Thompson, the violinist?
  2. After looking at the excerpt from Chapter 8, answer the essential question: What happens to Simon in chapter 8 of Lord of the Flies? How do you know? Why is it significant? (Support your answer with evidence.)
  3. What does Simon say in Chapter 7 about the beast? What does he think the beast is?

Homework:
  1. Read your book love book
  2. Make sure you finish the English Journal entry above.
  3. CLEAR YOUR ZEROS (I'm here after school today.)

Golding, Imagery, and Human Nature

Why (our essential question(s) of the day; why we're here): How does Golding use imagery to illustrate his perspective on human nature?

How (how we're going to work to answer the why): You'll work with a partner to write another two-chunk paragraph, this time relating Golding's understanding of human nature to the imagery in his book. You will be able to work together to make the best possible paragraph, and only turn in ONE paragraph between the two of you (so you're responsible for the success of each other).

What (what exactly you're going to do today; the agenda):
  1. Book Love (10 minutes)
  2. Literacy Letter (15 minutes)
    Here's the rubric for that.
  3. Self evaluate your two-chunk paragraph on symbolism in Lord of the Flies. (10 minutes)
    Here's the rubric for that.
  4. Extend our conversation about the passage we read yesterday. (10 minutes)
  5. WRITING! (20 minutes)
-----------------------------------------

Literacy Letter:
  1. On a piece of paper, you will write a letter to me (Ms. Black), with proper greeting, date, and even signature.
  2. Please take a look at the rubric for requirements.
  3. Today's prompt for Paragraph 2: In your letter this week, write about the book’s genre and any connections you may have with the book. Can you connect and identify with the characters? Does this book remind you of any other book you have read? Does this book make you think of anything that is happening in the world? This prompt can be answered no matter what the genre is! Don’t forget to rate your book 1-10 and explain why!
  4. Make sure you print your name at the bottom. You can sign it, but I need you to print your name, too.

Writing Assignment:
You'll be working with your partner (assigned today) to write a two-chunk paragraph together. The rubric will be the same, but you will both get the same grade, meaning your are responsible for the success of both of you.

The prompt: How does Golding use imagery to illustrate his perspective of human nature?

We wrote a topic sentence today. If you were absent, it may be a good idea to come prepared with a thought on what yours might be.

Homework:
  • Vocabulary Homework Due TOMORROW at the beginning of class.
  • Chapter 4/5 Quiz on Thursday, September 17
  • Make sure your topic sentence is perfect before you come to class tomorrow.

Digging in: Is Jack a snake?

Why (our essential question(s) of the day; why we're here): How does Golding use imagery to illustrate his beliefs about human nature?

How (how we're going to work to answer the why): We'll look closely at a few paragraphs from Chapter 3 about Jack.

  2. Root Vocabulary - VOC
  3. Two-Chunk/MLA review of homework
  4. Close reading activity and in-class writing assignment

    • you should write this information on your tech cheat sheet.

Homework:
  • Book Love (As always. Also: Literacy Letter tomorrow. You should have made some progress in a book (i.e. probably at least 70-100 pages.) It's your first one, so don't worry too much, but you need to make sure you're reading.
  • Read Chapter 4 in Lord of the Flies
  • Submit your two-chunk paragraph to turn item.com AND revise your paper version for MLA structure so that it is PERFECT. (You get a zero until MLA on this is perfect.)

And now, a short video for your amusement because it's what I think of when I think of snakes. You're welcome:
In case you don't know, this is from "A Very Potter Musical." Some high schoolers wrote their own Harry Potter Musical and put it on at their school. Darren Chris is Harry Potter, back when he wasn't famous and on Glee. (You can find it on Youtube.)
