Gathering Evidence: What do these authors believe about humanity?

Yesterday, you participated in a Socratic Seminar.

Today, you take what you discussed, and what you've written down over the course of the past couple weeks, and focus on evidence.

Here's the question: Is humanity inherently good or inherently evil?

Today your opinion doesn't matter (Sorry. It happens sometimes).
Today you only focus on what the authors of our texts believe.

Socratic Seminar Day!

Today we practice our speaking and listening skills with a Socratic seminar. We start with small groups to give everyone a chance to speak in a smaller, less intimidating context, and everyone a chance to only listen. Sometimes we learn from each other by not speaking at all, even when we have strong opinions. (Remember, though, it's about finding balance for YOU. Participation in this requires you to talk at some point.)

If you are absent, you have an opportunity to make it up on THURSDAY at lunch in room 2307.

One more Socratic Seminar Preparation Day

Okay. So I know you walked in today intending to participate in a Socratic Seminar.
For a variety of reasons, I would like us to take one more day before we do that. 
This will mean that it will be HIGHLY important that you are present tomorrow.

Here's today's agenda:

  2. Answer a question in your English Journal about Chapter 9 
  3. Test out a new tool called Socrative to discuss your English Journal entry
  4. Finish your preparation guide if you haven't already, turn it in by the end of the period.
  5. Either work on Vocab or listen to Chapter 10 on audio if we have time: your choice.

What is the “beast” that the boys kill? How and why did this occur? How is this event ironic and especially tragic (not only for the “beast,” but for everyone on the island)? How is it symbolically significant?

What's going on with Simon? and other inquiries

Our agenda today:
  1. Literacy Letter

  3. Continue looking at the Katrina Superdome article (just the last page)
  4. A close look at a passage from Chapter 8 in Lord of the Flies
  5. A little bit of writing in your English Journal

A few things to write in your English Journal in complete sentences. (Make sure to include today's date, and this goes at the top of the document) It is expected that for each of these questions, you write at least 3-4 sentences, and develop your thought fully. If you do not finish in class, it is homework:
  1. In the Superdome article, why did the author choose to end the article by talking about Samuel Thompson, the violinist?
  2. After looking at the excerpt from Chapter 8, answer the essential question: What happens to Simon in chapter 8 of Lord of the Flies? How do you know? Why is it significant? (Support your answer with evidence.)
  3. What does Simon say in Chapter 7 about the beast? What does he think the beast is?

Homework:
  1. Read your book love book
  2. Make sure you finish the English Journal entry above.

  1. On a piece of paper, you will write a letter to me (Ms. Black), with proper greeting, date, and even signature.
  2. Please take a look at the rubric for requirements.
  3. Today's prompt for Paragraph 2: In your letter this week, write about the book’s genre and any connections you may have with the book. Can you connect and identify with the characters? Does this book remind you of any other book you have read? Does this book make you think of anything that is happening in the world? This prompt can be answered no matter what the genre is! Don’t forget to rate your book 1-10 and explain why!
  4. Make sure you print your name at the bottom. You can sign it, but I need you to print your name, too.

Writing Assignment:
You'll be working with your partner (assigned today) to write a two-chunk paragraph together. The rubric will be the same, but you will both get the same grade, meaning your are responsible for the success of both of you.

What (what exactly you're going to do today; the agenda):

Chapter 2: Fire on the Mountain

Why (our essential question(s) of the day; why we're here): How do Golding's characters interact with each other as they learn about their situation and try to deal with it? How do we problem solve?

How (how we're going to work to answer the ): I'm going to do a little bit of modeling and we're going to work in groups to explore key questions as we read, gathering evidence from our text.

What (what exactly we're going to do today; the agenda):

  1. Book Love
  2. Six Word Memoir Share (everyone else!)
  3. Explore yesterday's Key Questions on your note-taking guide (I know we rushed the last part of the day)
  4. Begin reading Chapter 2 (our goal is to get at least fifteen solid minutes of reading in. It may or may not happen.)
Homework:
  • Read ALL of Chapter 2 of Lord of the Flies
  • Explore the "Key Question" given to you in class on your Note-Taking/Discussion Guide
    • Why can't Jack fulfill his duties as hunter at the end of the first chapter?
    • How do the boys try to establish order on the island?

Beginning Lord of the Flies

Why (Why we're doing what we're doing today): Today we want to discover more about the context of Lord of the Flies so that we can examine who Golding was and why he wrote this book. The context will give us a stronger framework through which to view the plot/characters/meaning throughout the book.

How (How we're going to achieve the why): You'll work in groups to explore Golding's life and information related to the concepts we'll cover while reading this book. We'll start reading together so that you have a solid foundation as you go home to read on your own.

What (what exactly we're going to do today; the agenda):
  1. Book Love
  2. Six Word Memoir Share (half the class)
  3. Lord of the Flies Search and Study (You're still responsible for this if you're absent. You'll have to do it on your own, though.)
  4. Begin Reading Lord of the Flies Chapter 1 and filling out our note-taking guide together.

Homework:
  • Finish reading Lord of the Flies Chapter 1. 
    • Stick notes in your book where you find information that will help you answer the Key Questions.
    • Stick notes in your book where you see references to any of the symbols/ideas on your bookmark. 
    • Regarding Post-its: If you don't have any or honestly believe you cannot get any, please see me after class.
    • Fill out the note-taking/discussion guide for our two key questions: 
      • How do the boys try to establish order on the island?
      • Why can't Jack fulfill his duty as hunter at the end of chapter 1?

Six Word Memoirs and Vocab Introduction

We have a quite a few goals today:
  1. Book Love
  2. Learn quiz procedures by taking a quiz. (Don't panic about this. It'll be okay.)
  3. Learn about our Lord of the Flies reading schedule.
  4. New vocabulary root: PRO
  5. Six Word Memoirs

Six Word Memoirs: Tell your story in six words exactly.

  1. Think of important memories/milestones in your life.
  2. Write one down.
  3. Whittle it down to six words. Don't be afraid to play with word choice and punctuation, but it must be grammatically correct.
  4. Fill your blank paper with your memoir (BIG WORDS.). Add drawings/color/etc. as you see fit.


Ms. Black wrote this one last year.
Examples: 
Famous:
“Well, I thought it was funny.” – Stephen Colbert  
“Everyone reads what’s in my diary.”– Taylor Swift

Not so famous:
“Cursed with cancer. Blessed with friends.”  
“I colored outside of the lines.”
“Got three sisters and no dad.”

  1. Complete your Six Word Memoir. Due Tuesday September 8 when class starts. Put your name on the back (or front, if you'd like).

Crash Landing

Still no seating chart.
Please sit in a group with at least TWO people you didn't sit with yesterday. Make sure you know their names.

Get out your acknowledgement form that you got signed yesterday.

Today is entirely based upon in-class activities. If you are absent, you missed out, but don't have anything new to turn in. You still need to get your Acknowledgement Form to me, ASAP.


FOR TOMORROW (Homework):
  • If you don't have Lord of the Flies (which you should have gotten at registration), go to the library TODAY and get it. Bring it to class.
  • Get yourself a book for book love. Ask me for suggestions if you need them. Bring it with you to class (and everywhere).
  • Turn in your acknowledgement form if you were slacking and didn't get it to me today.
  • I suggest you review the syllabus that you can find online on School Loop for English 2. It'll probably help with the quiz you're going to get.
